From Your First Call to Your First Day of Treatment
Deciding to seek treatment is a significant step, but figuring out how to actually begin should not make the process more difficult.
You may be wondering whether you need detox, how quickly you can enter treatment, what information you need to provide, what insurance may cover, what to bring, or what will happen when you arrive.
Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape helps patients and families navigate those questions one step at a time.
You do not need to know which level of care you need before contacting us. Our admissions and clinical process is designed to help determine an appropriate starting point based on your substance use, health, circumstances, and treatment needs.

the cape experience
The environment supports recovery.
Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape is located along Florida’s Gulf Coast in Port St. Joe.
For some patients, leaving their usual environment creates meaningful distance from routines, pressures, relationships, and triggers associated with substance use.
The coastal setting can provide opportunities for movement, reflection, mindfulness, and time outdoors while patients focus more intentionally on recovery.
Treatment planning doesn’t end at admission
Step 1: Start With a Conversation
The first step is contacting our admissions team.
You can call whether you are ready to enter treatment, still deciding what to do, or gathering information for someone you love. Speaking with admissions does not commit you to treatment.
During the initial conversation, we will learn more about what is happening and answer questions about Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape.
We may ask about topics such as:
- Current alcohol or drug use
- Substances being used
- Frequency and duration of use
- Previous attempts to stop
- Withdrawal concerns or previous withdrawal experiences
- Medical history and current health concerns
- Mental health history and current symptoms
- Previous addiction or mental health treatment
- Current medications
- Family or support-system considerations
- Insurance or payment information
- Current circumstances and treatment goals
You do not need to prepare a perfect history before calling. The purpose of the conversation is to begin gathering the information needed to understand what kind of support may be appropriate.
Step 2: Complete the Screening and Assessment Process
The next step is determining whether Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape is an appropriate treatment option and what level of care may be clinically indicated.
This process considers more than how much or how often someone has been using alcohol or drugs.
Substance use history, withdrawal risk, physical health, psychiatric needs, mental health concerns, previous treatment, current stability, recovery environment, and other individual factors can all influence treatment recommendations.
Based on the information gathered, a patient may be appropriate for:

Specialized care for veterans & First responders
FTC’s approach to individualized treatment also shapes our Veterans & First Responders Track.
Veterans, law enforcement professionals, firefighters, EMS professionals, corrections professionals, and others in service-oriented careers may share aspects of occupational culture, but they do not share identical treatment needs.
Some may be affected by traumatic experiences. Others may be navigating chronic occupational stress, sleep disruption, grief, relationships, identity, transition from service, or concerns unrelated to their profession.
Our Track provides opportunities for shared connection and programming that understands the culture of service while ensuring each patient continues to receive individualized clinical care.
The profession provides context. It does not define the treatment plan.
Step 3: Verify Insurance and Discuss Payment Options
Understanding the financial side of treatment is an important part of deciding how to move forward.
Our admissions team can help verify insurance benefits for addiction treatment and explain the information available regarding your plan. Coverage can vary based on the insurance policy, level of care, medical necessity, authorization requirements, and other factors.
Insurance verification can help you better understand available benefits, but verification itself is not a guarantee that an insurance company will pay for all services.
If insurance is not being used or additional financial considerations apply, admissions can discuss available payment options and answer questions about the financial process.
We want patients and families to have as much information as possible before making decisions about care.

Step 4: Determine Whether FTC Is the Right Fit
Admission should be about more than whether a bed or program is available.
The information gathered during the admissions process helps determine whether Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape can appropriately meet the patient’s needs.
If FTC is an appropriate fit, our team can explain the recommended starting level of care and begin coordinating admission.
This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions.
You may want to know what treatment will look like, how communication works, what you should bring, what happens with medications, how long treatment may last, or what happens after the initial level of care.
Clear information can make entering treatment feel more manageable.
Step 5: Plan Your Arrival
Patients receive guidance regarding the practical details they need to know before admission.
This may include information about:
- Arrival and check-in procedures
- What to bring to treatment
- Items that should remain at home
- Current medications
- Identification and necessary documentation
- Communication expectations
- Travel and arrival considerations when applicable
- Other information specific to the patient’s admission
If you are traveling to Port St. Joe from another part of Florida or from out of state, admissions can discuss arrival planning and available coordination based on your circumstances. You do not have to figure out every logistical detail on your own.
Step 6: Arrive and Begin the Intake Process
When you arrive at Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape, the focus shifts from preparing for treatment to understanding what you need from it.
The intake and evaluation process allows the team to develop a more complete picture of your substance use, physical health, mental health, history, current concerns, and treatment goals.
Medical, psychiatric, and clinical evaluation can help identify needs that may not have been fully apparent during the initial admissions conversation.
That information becomes part of the foundation for individualized treatment planning.
The goal is not to place every patient into the same treatment experience. It is to understand the person who has arrived and determine how care can best support their recovery.
Step 7: Develop Your Individualized Treatment Plan
Admission is not the end of the assessment process.
As treatment begins, the multidisciplinary team continues learning about the patient’s needs, strengths, challenges, patterns, relationships, mental health, and response to treatment.
An individualized treatment plan can incorporate evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches based on clinical needs. Care may include individual and group therapy, psychiatric services, medical support, medication management when appropriate, recovery education, relapse-prevention planning, wellness activities, and other therapeutic interventions.
Treatment plans are not meant to remain unchanged from admission through discharge.
As patients progress and clinicians gain additional insight, treatment can evolve.
What If I Need Medical Detox First?
You do not need to know whether you need detox before contacting admissions.
For some people, abruptly stopping alcohol or certain drugs can produce withdrawal symptoms that require medical monitoring. Substance use history, previous withdrawal experiences, physical health, medications, and other factors can affect that determination.
If medical detoxification is the appropriate starting point, Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape can provide medically monitored withdrawal management as part of our continuum of care.
After stabilization, patients can continue into an appropriate level of addiction treatment when clinically indicated.
What If I Am Coming From Another Treatment Provider?
Patients may come to Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape after receiving care from a hospital, detoxification program, behavioral health provider, therapist, treatment center, or another healthcare professional.
When appropriate and with necessary permissions, our admissions team can coordinate with referral professionals to help facilitate the transition and obtain relevant information.
Communication between providers can help create greater continuity as a patient moves from one setting or level of care to another.
Healthcare professionals interested in referring someone can also contact FTC directly.
What If I'm Calling for Someone Else?
You can contact Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape even if the person you are concerned about has not made the call themselves.
Many treatment journeys begin with a spouse, partner, parent, sibling, friend, clinician, or other concerned person seeking information.
Our admissions team can listen to what has been happening, explain available treatment options, and help you understand what the admissions process could look like if your loved one decides to enter care.
There are limits to what can be discussed once someone becomes a patient because of privacy and confidentiality requirements, but you do not need permission simply to call and ask general questions about treatment options.
How Long Will I Be in Treatment?
It is understandable to want to know exactly how long you will be away from home, work, family, or other responsibilities.
At Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape, treatment duration is not based solely on an arbitrary calendar date.
Recommendations consider clinical presentation, individual circumstances, treatment progress, recovery goals, and readiness to transition to another level of care.
Some patients may move through multiple levels within FTC’s continuum. Others may begin at or transition to different levels based on what is clinically appropriate.
Discharge and level-of-care decisions develop over time with the patient rather than being determined solely by a fixed schedule at admission.
What Should I Do Before Leaving for Treatment?
Once your admission is scheduled, follow the instructions provided by the admissions team regarding medications, packing, documentation, travel, and arrival.
Try not to make assumptions about what you can or cannot bring. Our team can provide current guidance before you leave home.
If something changes before your scheduled arrival, including your health, substance use, medications, or travel plans, contact admissions so the team can determine whether any part of the plan needs to change.
Preparing for treatment does not mean you need to have recovery figured out.
Your responsibility is simply to take the next step.
What Happens After I Become a Patient?
Treatment begins with the level of care determined to be appropriate for your needs.
From there, progress is evaluated throughout your time at Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape. As your needs change, your treatment plan and level of support may change with you.
The purpose of the continuum is not to move every patient through an identical sequence.
It is to provide access to different levels of care so treatment can respond to where the patient is in recovery.
Ultimately, the goal is not simply to complete a program. It is to prepare for recovery outside of treatment.
