Day/Night Programming (PHP)

Intensive Treatment With Greater Independence

Recovery needs can change as treatment progresses. A patient who initially benefits from the structure of residential treatment may eventually be ready for greater independence while still needing significant clinical support.

Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape provides Day/Night Programming, also known as Partial Hospitalization Programming (PHP), in Florida for adults recovering from substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health concerns.

PHP provides intensive therapeutic programming while creating opportunities for patients to take greater responsibility for their recovery. Patients can continue addressing substance use, emotional health, relationships, coping strategies, and relapse prevention while beginning to apply what they have learned with increasing independence.

Located in Port St. Joe along Florida’s Gulf Coast, The Cape provides PHP as part of a comprehensive continuum of addiction treatment.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program for Addiction?

    Structured support, greater independence

A Partial Hospitalization Program for addiction, commonly called PHP, provides a high level of structured behavioral health treatment without the same level of structure associated with residential care.

PHP can serve as an important bridge between more intensive treatment and greater independence. Patients continue participating in structured clinical programming while developing the skills and confidence needed to navigate more of everyday life.

At Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape, Day/Night Programming is not simply a shorter version of residential treatment. It represents a different stage of care in which patients can continue intensive therapeutic work while assuming greater responsibility for applying recovery skills.

PHP may be appropriate as a transition from residential treatment or as an initial level of care when supported by clinical evaluation.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program for Addiction?

Who May Benefit From PHP Addiction Treatment?

The appropriate level of addiction treatment depends on the individual rather than a predetermined sequence.

PHP addiction treatment in Florida may be appropriate for adults who:

    • Need intensive clinical support but do not require the structure of residential treatment
    • Have completed detoxification or residential care and are ready for greater independence
    • Continue to need frequent therapeutic programming
    • Are working to strengthen coping and emotional regulation skills
    • Need continued support for substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns
    • Are beginning to apply recovery skills with greater independence
    • Need additional structure before transitioning into a less intensive outpatient setting
    • Have experienced difficulty maintaining recovery with lower levels of support
    • Would benefit from continued psychiatric, clinical, and recovery-focused care
PHP is not automatically the right next step for every patient leaving residential treatment. Level-of-care decisions are based on clinical needs, progress, circumstances, and readiness.

    What Happens in Day/Night Programming?

Day/Night Programming provides structured therapeutic care designed to continue the work patients have begun at earlier stages of treatment or address the needs that brought them directly into PHP.

Depending on the patient’s individualized treatment plan, care may incorporate:

    • Individual therapy
    • Group therapy
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
    • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
    • EMDR when clinically appropriate
    • Trauma-focused therapies
    • Mindfulness-based interventions
    • Psychiatric services
    • Medication management when clinically appropriate
    • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) when clinically appropriate
    • Recovery education
    • Relapse-prevention planning
    • Wellness and recovery skill development
The purpose is not only to continue therapy. It is to help patients increasingly translate what they are learning into behaviors that can support recovery outside of treatment.

    Building Independence Without Removing Support

One of the most important transitions in addiction treatment occurs when a patient begins moving from highly structured care toward greater independence.

In residential treatment, much of the patient’s day and environment are structured around recovery. Eventually, recovery needs to function with fewer external controls.

Day/Night Programming helps create that transition. Patients can begin taking greater responsibility for routines, decisions, coping strategies, relationships, and recovery behaviors while remaining connected to substantial clinical support.

Challenges that emerge during this period can become important opportunities for treatment. Instead of waiting until structured care has ended to discover where someone is struggling, the treatment team can help patients recognize and address those challenges as they occur.

    Building Independence Without Removing Support

    Individualized Treatment Continues in PHP

Moving into a different level of care does not mean starting over with a new treatment plan.

At Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape, treatment can continue evolving as the patient progresses through the continuum.

Our multidisciplinary team considers changes in emotional health, treatment engagement, substance use risk, relationships, coping skills, psychiatric needs, recovery goals, and readiness for increasing independence.

This helps ensure that partial hospitalization treatment remains responsive to what the patient needs now rather than simply following decisions made at the beginning of treatment.

Progress is not measured solely by the number of days someone has spent in care.

PHP for Co-Occurring Mental Health Concerns

Substance use can occur alongside anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, grief, chronic stress, and other mental health concerns.

These symptoms do not necessarily disappear because someone has stopped using alcohol or drugs. In some cases, they may become more noticeable as substances are removed and the patient begins engaging more fully in treatment.

Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape provides integrated treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns.

Medical, psychiatric, and clinical professionals work collaboratively to understand how these concerns may affect recovery and determine appropriate interventions as treatment progresses.

Veterans & First Responders in PHP

Veterans and First Responders receiving care at Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape may participate in the dedicated Veterans & First Responders Track when appropriate.

Specialized programming recognizes that military service, law enforcement, fire service, EMS, corrections, and other service-oriented professions can involve experiences and occupational cultures that may be relevant to recovery.

Shared programming can provide connection with others who understand aspects of service culture, while individualized treatment ensures care remains focused on the needs of each patient.

    Relapse Prevention in Day/Night Treatment

Knowing what to do in theory and being able to do it when life becomes difficult are not always the same thing.

As patients gain greater independence, they have opportunities to recognize where recovery skills are strong and where additional work may be needed.

Relapse-prevention planning can include identifying triggers, recognizing early warning signs, managing cravings, developing responses to high-risk situations, strengthening emotional regulation, establishing healthier routines, and determining when to ask for additional support.

Rather than treating relapse prevention as something discussed immediately before discharge, these skills can be developed and practiced throughout treatment.

Day/Night Addiction Treatment Along Florida's Gulf Coast

Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape provides PHP addiction treatment in Port St. Joe, Florida, as part of our continuum of care.

The Gulf Coast environment offers opportunities for wellness, movement, mindfulness, outdoor experiences, and reflection as patients continue the clinical work of recovery.

The environment is not the treatment. It creates space to engage more intentionally in the treatment itself.

Clinical care, psychiatric support, therapy, individualized planning, and recovery skill development remain central to the Day/Night experience.

    What Comes After PHP?

For some patients, the next step after Day/Night Programming may be Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP).

IOP provides continued therapeutic support with greater independence, allowing patients to continue strengthening recovery while navigating more responsibilities outside of structured treatment.

The transition is not based solely on completing a certain number of days in PHP. The treatment team considers clinical progress, stability, engagement, individual circumstances, recovery skills, and readiness for a less intensive level of care.

Some patients may require different recommendations depending on their needs.

Is PHP the Right Level of Care for Me?

You do not have to determine that yourself.

Some patients enter PHP after completing residential treatment. Others may be clinically appropriate to begin treatment at this level. Still others may need greater or less intensive support.

Florida Treatment Centers at The Cape is fully licensed and currently accepting adult patients. Our admissions team can learn more about what you or your loved one is experiencing, discuss payment and insurance options, and help determine an appropriate next step.
